Designed by Vito Acconci, this ‘island’ has a sunbathing area, a trendy bar and a coffee house, plus it allows you to cross the Mur River in Graz, Austria.

While Aiola Island Bridge crosses a river like a bridge should, it does much more.  Aiola Island was built in 2003 and designed by New York artist Vito Acconci.  Located in the center of the Mur River in Graz, Austria, it includes a trendy bar, a coffee house, a sunbathing area, an open-air theater, and a children’s playground.  Acconci created the bridge to serve as an “artificial joint” that links nature with the city, and opens the middle of the Mur River into an accessible and useful part of urban life.  The organically curved facade is constructed by using triangular facets of either Nirosta steel panels or flat glass panels.  Since its creation, Aiola Island has understandably become a popular local attraction.
